Monica is a young physician in training as a psychiatrist in Seattle. She's from Chicago and Phoenix and is guided by the principles of grit, thoughtfulness, and intensity.

Monica is in her third year of residency. She writes here about medicine, burnout, trying to be a good person, and feelings. This blog is just for fun.


Monica is in residency at the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry, received her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, and graduated magna cum laude from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She studied Latin at Shimer College during her time as an undergraduate.

She has written for the lit mags of UIC COM (Body Electric) and IIT (LIIT), for IIT's newspaper (TechNews), for online medical publications KevinMD and in-House, for HOUSE (UW's Housestaff Quality & Safety Committee's publication) and for thousands of readers at blogs on various platforms. Honors and awards include induction in the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society, winning the Lewis Department of Humanities Annual Writing Contest (2nd in 2010, 1st in 2011, and 3rd in 2012), the Silver Scalpel Award for Surgical Excellence in the M3 Clerkship in 2015, and Tutor of the Year at the IIT Academic Resource Center.

Her projects have included helping to develop a screening tool for adverse childhood experiences (ACE) in pediatric clinics, co-chairing the UIC COM Wellness Committee, tutoring medical students and undergraduates, and helping to lead groups including a narrative psychiatry club, the residency wellness committee, a psychiatry interest group, UIC COM Artists, and the Global Health Leaders Program.

Other areas of study include baking, ukulele, running, and petting cats.
